Outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish have caused damage to coral reefs\"\n\nSo the project will help to find Crown-of-thorns Starfishes and detected Starfishes will be killed? \n\nHow ethical is this topic, what is your opinion?",

"1601416": "akmalmir, thank you for such an insightful question. Is there a way to deal with COTS without killing them, I wonder? I would not want to harm COTS. Perhaps, we could move them to a different coral reef that is not as critical as the Great Barrier Reef. Hence, they can live. Or maybe we do have to kill them.",
"1601449": "Dear @anhnguyen811 i believe there are some other ways(solutions) of COTS Management but i feel in terms on investment into ecology, governments choose most inexpensive and effective solution. So that in my opinion further research needed.\nFound here are two interesting articles:\n\n# https://www.livingoceansfoundation.org/science/crown-of-thorns-starfish/managing-cots-outbreak/\n#https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-69466-1",
"1605781": "This is an important question. However at the moment, like many other decisions made by humans, we have to prioritize between an uncontrolled COTS outbreak and saving an already dying coral population. The answer is not without demerits, but at the moment, it is what is needed.",
"1607079": "Don't overthink guys. The universe is absurd and cruel.",
"1608901": "I have a different sentiment. I think it behooves all of us to consider the ethical ramifications of our work. The universe may be absurd and cruel, that doesn't imply that we should be, too. In the case of COTS, we're worried about population estimates and, almost certainly, the idea of targeted population control. I don't have a problem with that, particularly as I suspect echinoderms aren't sentient, but I think we should all reflect on the tools we're building and the uses to which they may be put.",
"1610210": "There is already an effort to build a robot that will [give them lethal injections](https://youtu.be/WXmvOjiYdvo). For context, I believe these starfish are invasive to the Great Barrier Reef, but if not, they are at least detrimental for other reasons. It seems there is something of a consensus among the relevant ecologists about their negative effects.",
