"content": "<p>Though I’ve lived a really long time in Canada, I started out in Russia. I’m not hundred percent sure what the education there is like now, but I do remember that the academic rigour in subjects related to math was leaps ahead of anything I’ve seen in Canadian (or American) schools. By grade 5 we covered a lot of material that in Canada I’ve only encountered in grade 10. When I went to school in Canada, immigrants from Eastern Europe and Asia found Canadian math curriculum pretty much a joke. People with ‘C’ averages in their original countries were suddenly ‘A’ students in math. The advantages translated to university and so on. </p>\n\n<p>Essentially Asia and Russia follow a ‘learn-by-drilling-and-practicing-a-lot’ math curriculums. By the time the kids grow up, they have a pretty solid grasp of basic mathematical concepts and can build on them. While, at least in North America, general public education has shifted to a ‘learn-by-discovery-homework-is-bad’ kind of attitude. For instance, elementary school students here are not exposed to multi-step word problems, they learn multiplication by endlessly adding things up (no memorization of the table is expected), in grade 5 are still literally doing questions like 22 + 10. Unless kids go to special schools or have really focused parents who supplement public education, they really don’t learn that much and tend to fall off the math-oriented paths. The really driven ones have to do a lot of catching up on their own. And the ones with special schools/programs/supplementary books are unsurprisingly also more likely to have parents from Asian and Eastern European backgrounds.</p>\n\n<p>Add that up to China actively promoting machine learning, and it's no surprise that they have a lot of people both interested and capable of figuring out this field, compared to North America.</p>",

Fairbank and Edwin O. Reischauer, professors of East Asian Studies at Harvard University, wrote (in East Asia: The Great Tradition): \"When Europeans traveled far to the east to reach Cathay, Japan and the Indies, they naturally gave those distant regions the general name 'Far East.' Americans who reached China, Japan and Southeast Asia by sail and steam across the Pacific could, with equal logic, have called that area the 'Far West.' For the people who live in that part of the world, however, it is neither 'East' nor 'West' and certainly not 'Far.' A more generally acceptable term for the area is 'East Asia,' which is geographically more precise and does not imply the outdated notion that Europe is the center of the civilized world.\"[4]'] + more</p>",

"326472": "Well, I also observed that Chinese and Russian names pop-up in the top of the LB. Might this be related to the STEM (and especially mathematics) high standards in high school and university in these countries? As well as the recent high attention given to AI and ML by Government both in Russia and China ?\n\nhttp://fortune.com/2017/09/04/ai-artificial-intelligence-putin-rule-world/\n\nhttps://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/20/business/china-artificial-intelligence.html\n\n",
"328571": "Though I’ve lived a really long time in Canada, I started out in Russia. \n\nEssentially Asia and Russia follow a ‘learn-by-drilling-and-practicing-a-lot’ math curriculums. And the ones with special schools/programs/supplementary books are unsurprisingly also more likely to have parents from Asian and Eastern European backgrounds.\n\nAdd that up to China actively promoting machine learning, and it's no surprise that they have a lot of people both interested and capable of figuring out this field, compared to North America.\n",
"326329": "Have you noticed that top 5 teams have at least one member from China or Japan, if not all members? This is impressive.\n\nI hope this is not a trend, being from Europe ;) \n\n*Edited title from 'Far East ' to 'East Asia'.*",
"326909": "It was a [Golden Week](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Week_(Japan))(The National Holiday) in Japan from April 28th to May 6th.\nSo this competition which ends on May 8th was very good timing for many Japanese including me. :)",
"326900": "I have had a look at some of these chinese platforms, the competition topics themselves are quite interesting, but the activity on the forum, and the sharing facilities were a lot more limited compare to Kaggle. There is also the perception that folks on Kaggle are a lot more open at sharing their solutions.\n\nPersonally, after many years living in Europe, I have probably become a bit too liberal than I care to admit and I found the registration of most of these chinese platform asking way too many personal questions! :p ",
"326473": "It is funny to be downvoted for stating a true and verifiable fact. \n\n It is because I wrote 'I hope this is not a trend, being from Europe' ? I though the Smiley would show I'm not serious about it.\n\nI also thought we are data scientists here, and that looking at data would not trigger any dispute. I merely looked at data here, everyone can check that I stated a true fact.\n\nAnyway, if people want to downvote for whatever reason, then I hope they feel better after it.",

"326890": "I think there are many reasons for that, but the most important could be that machine learning(or AI) is becoming popular in China, many big companies and universities focus on this field. And Kaggle is a good place to learn and to do something in this field. ",
