The competition is (most of the part) merely based on luck. </p>\n<p>IMO, the solution from the top 3 teams is not surprising, not enough novelty there to be there, yet they placed. There are many top kaggler (i.e. 1st Comp. GM) couldn't achieve a single medal. What to blame, system! However, If I were you, I would ignore the hater.</p>",

"975029": "First of all congrats on your high silver medal . Good for you . I have not downvoted you as I didn't want to bring sadness in your joy . \n\nHowever there are few things that I do find a bit off :\na) I have got a medal once just by tweaking a public model and submitting few hours before competition end . Was that illegal ? No . But can I promote that behaviour ? No . Because , I will then be misguiding a lot of people who probably would look upto kaggle community to learn . It was mere luck , there was no fun , I didn't learn anything . \nb) Is ensembling bad ? No . But along with your post if you would have put the factors if any to chose model for ensemble , method of ensemble then probably people would also know that what are the tricks of the trade rather than probably blindly following a practice . \n\nI think probably few people found these small points worth to downvote . ",
"974586": "I got some helpful feedback so I'm editing this post. Thanks for that. Basically I didn't have time for this competition, saw it was very unstable, and submitted two public kernel ensembles. \n\nI found sometimes in these very unstable competitions, there are alot of public overfitting that may not perform well in private LB, and sometimes a heavily ensembled solution ends up being stable enough to weather the shakeup. The submissions were one ensemble of the top 9 public lb kernels and the other one about the top ~20 public kernels. The top ~20 lb kernels blend scored 32nd place. It just used straight average. \n\nI did this before for the ASHRAE competition and I silvered that one as well. That ASHRAE competition was also unstable with crazy public overfitting if I remember correctly.\n\nI originally posted encase someone found it interesting. \n\nThis post has been edited.",
"975803": "First good for you, second please be careful about how you phrase this: `I did nothing`. Because some us did work hard to come out with our solution, which may not be as good as blindly blending 20 public kernels but which has the taste of sweat, authenticity and hard work. To be honest I don't even understand why someone would spend time blending 20 public kernels but that's your problem not mine.\n\nOn a more interesting note, what happens if one of the public notebooks does not follow the competition rules? People should not be able to use it, but how would Kaggle know? This is an interesting question in my opinion and your example shows that public sharing can become an issue even in top 1-2% of Kaggle Competitions.\n\nAs an example : Imagine someone hand labeled their test solution and called it a blend of blend. Then what happens to people who use it? Everyone is disqualified? How do you spot them?\n\n\n",
