I was hoping for a good gold, but the top place, really?

This post is just to thank Bertrand for inviting me to join. He did most of the work for our team, and he will describe our solution tomorrow or later.

I just want to thank him for inviting me to join when he was (already) on top of the leaderboard. And we can all thank him for numerous shares on the forum. Last, but not least, he shared a leak he found with the host, rather than keeping it for himself. The leak would have secured him the top finish, by far. Giving is away was a major gift to the community. I am glad he got his crown back at the end.

What I did on the team was mostly to push for being conservative and have us rely on cross validation. Indeed, the temptation, when many teams have close score on top of LB, is to fight for rank and overfit as a side effect.

One thing I am proud of is how robust our method was: we have 21 submissions that scored 0.705 on private LB. Two of our selected subs are in that group. The third selection one is for the efficiency prize.

I also want to thank Kaggle and the host for this competition, even though I regret the numerous updates and extensions. Cherry on the cake, many teams did almost as well as us, congrats to all of you, I am eager to read all your writeups!

Public-private LB dynamic is actually a part of Kaggle I enjoy (which may sound weird under the circumstances), because it very much reminds me of real-life production systems where non-stationarity is key and the ML system needs to be resistant to feature/data drifts. Kaggle teaches that lesson very well :)
