  "content": "<p>Hi,</p>\n<p>I was trying to understand how the playResult is calculated, but fail to get a comprehensive understanding.</p>\n<p>From the definition, it is &gt; Net yards gained by the kicking team, including penalty yardage (numeric)</p>\n<p>but it is a bit vague to me, and as my understanding, it should be the result minus the kickLength by the kickReturnYardage. But when I checked the data, it was unexpected as I see it.</p>\n<p>Could anyone please guide me a bit on it?</p>\n<p>Thanks in advance :) </p>",

      "content": "<p><code>playResult</code> represents the change in yard line from where the ball is snapped (on field goal / punt plays) or being kicked (on kickoff plays) to where the ball is snapped on the next play. <code>kickLength</code> represents where the ball lands so if ball is not fielded cleanly it will typically lead to the difference you are describing.</p>\n<p>For PATs/Extra Points, <code>playResult</code> will always be 0 as no matter what the next play will be kickoff.</p>\n<p>For Field Goals, if the kick is made <code>playResult</code> will be 0 as that will end the drive and trigger a kickoff. If the kick is missed <code>playResult</code> will typically be -8 (but can be less than -8 if kick is inside opposing 12 as ball must go back to at least 20). If kick is blocked, <code>playResult</code> will depend on where the blocking team returns the ball to.</p>\n<p>For punts, the <code>playResult</code> if the ball is fielded cleanly from the air, the value will almost always be <code>kickLength</code> - <code>kickReturnYardage</code> + <code>penaltyYards</code>.
