In this case, the return team does not touch the ball and instead lets it land on the ground. When downing a punt, the kicking team wants to let the ball go as far as possible. \"Downed\" can also occur when an onside kick doesn't travel the necessary 10 yards and the kickoff team recovers it.</p>\n<p>\"Kickoff Team Recovery\" refers to when the kickoff teams obtains the ball (typically on an onside kick) without the return team gaining control of it after the ball travels 10+ yards.
