Unlike the public train portion of the MSKCC genomics dataset, there is no public availability of the public test set, so why make it not award tiers/points? Is it to discourage kaggle masters in favor of new users? </p>\n\n<p>Just interested for curiosity's sake :) </p>",

      "content": "<p>My understanding so far across other similar cases is that no-ranking points are awarded when the LB does not reflect the proper effort needed to be placed there. <br>\n(for whatever reason you want to think of, one could be its possible to cheat somehow)</p>\n\n<p>However, that does not explain why ranking points were given for <a href=\"https://www.kaggle.com/c/mercedes-benz-greener-manufacturing\">Mercedes Competition</a> :)</p>",

Those who have been with Kaggle for some time know there are many different things that can go wrong.</p>\n\n<p>For some of the research contests, we rely more heavily on the organizer to ensure that the data provided meets the necessary criteria for a meaningful competition. This allows us to provide a larger and more diverse set of challenges to the community.</p>\n\n<p>Of course, we leave it up to each competitor to decide whether the potential competition benefit - prize money, Kaggle points, the opportunity to attend a conference, personal learning, swag, etc. - is worth the time investment they put into the competition. </p>",

      "content": "<p>The 80-20 rule applies to these competitions. As soon as I have a reasonable score I generally quit the competition, as I rather spend my time on other things than fighting for the 4th, 5th or even 6th decimal.</p>",
