We do not engage in public speculation. The absence of a removal does not mean a rule wasn't broken (we might simply lack the \"evidence beyond a reasonable doubt\"). A removal does not mean a person had malicious intent (accidents happen, English is a 2nd language for many, and most people simply don't read the rules).

\n

Competition closes take time. We are not \"choosing to ignore\" a situation because two days have passed.

\n

In all competitions, we finalize the leaderboard (the action that releases medals) before the full winner obligations are fulfilled. This is done to prevent everyone from having to wait for weeks while we close the competition. We have and can remove teams after medals have gone out. We have removed teams from leaderboards years after the competition closed due to discovery of new evidence.

\n

\"Can we understand this is a[n] unofficial announcement for the tolerance to possibly inappropriate behaviors?\" No. The rules, site terms, your morals, and our collective community guidelines should govern your behavior here. You and only you can choose to conduct yourself with professionalism and integrity, or you can choose cut corners, pass blame, and justify inappropriate behaviors because others might be cheating the system.

\n
",

To some extent, the \"violation\" may not directly affect the final, selected kernel. The problem is, by submitting the weights for final inference purpose, it is relative hard to detect whether the external data are used for training that (those) model(s). But consider the GPU resources Kaggle have, everything should become easy. Just use their code and retrain 1 group. See how many downvotes for the \"public private 2nd place\" post.
\n\n
BUT, this time, everything seems to be too coincidence (there are similar situation before but not that kind of \"coincidence\"). As a part of the community has drawn the concerns and also (I believe) it is not hard to validate what we talked about, we hope Kaggle can carefully review this case.
",

But since this time the incident draws a lot of attention and also @dempton posted publicly that he has evidence that some teams cheating in the competition, I hope that Kaggle can share the information about the investigation when the timing is appropriate.
\n\n
Here are the questions I am concerned with:\n1. The top teams on public LB claimed their solution overfitting the LB, is that true? Do they choose the same kernel that achieved a high score in 1st stage for the 2nd stage? It it not, what is the 2nd stage socre of the high score kernel in the 1st stage?
\n\n
\n

@dempton said he has chat record with some of the top teams in public LB. So has kaggle teams got a chance to review his evidence?

\n

Is this incident a single event or actually may suggest other violations in previous competitions? This time the abnormal high score draw people's attention, but similar behavior may not be easily noticed to give the characteristics of kaggle competition.

\n

Is there any actions or plan that kaggle to prevent similar behavior we suspect here happened? Especially for the competition like imet, most people may use a similar model, so the dataset will play a vital role in the final grade. However, due to the blackbox of the deep learning model, it may not easy to disentangle how different the data used in the training process.

\n
\n\n
I really hope that kaggle team can answer my questions here!
