Another is:
\n
\n
All competitions are fundamentally like that; indeed look at lotteries; people pay to take part, knowing full well that some will win big and the vast majority will get (less than) nothing.
\n
Kaggle as has a staff of around 50 people, has nearly 9 million users, gives us disk space, hosted notebooks, CPU/GPU and even TPU time free, and as mentioned by @susnato invaluable access to an almost unique learning experience. Somebody has to pay to keep the lights on, and that money comes from companies like H&M that are implicitly recognizing the collective value of the kaggle data scientists by choosing kaggle to host their competition!
\n
\n
All the best and good luck!
\ncarl
",

      "content": "
Yes, that is a great deal. For that same amount they could have hired an intern or two, or maybe a contractor for a few months. In those cases they would have had 1 or 2 people focused on the problem for a few months. By hosting a competition they get hundreds of people looking at it, and they get to keep the best solution that those hundreds of collaborators come up with.
\n
What do the collaborators get in return? Most of us won't see a penny, but we do get the benefit of that collaboration. We all can (potentially) learn a little bit about solving this kind of problem when we see something similar in the future, whether that's in another competition or at our day jobs.
\n
Is that fair? I think so. I don't participate on Kaggle because I expect to win, I participate because I want to learn more about machine learning. The prizes are incentive for top experts to participate. I'm happy the prizes are there to make it worth their time to share their insights with the rest of us. I think that's a pretty good deal too.
",
