Rather, if the covid situation gets worse, extending deadline will be a disadvantage to those who are strongly affected by covid.\n2. Participating Kaggle competition is one of the few activities that are not directly affected by this covid-19 situation, since it is done online and people don't need to contact face to face to write code and submit a solution. Altering the schedule which has been decided almost 4 months ahead, is better be avoided.\n3. We are given 4 months for this competition, which is already 2x normal kaggle competition duration. Also, all of us had ~2 months that were not affected by covid.\n4. Dedicated participants, who have been working hard for more than 3 months, have planned their schedules considering current deadline. Extending the deadline will be unfair to those participants.\n5. Only 2 weeks are left. 87.5% of the competition duration have passed, so it is nearing the end. Unexpected deadline extension near the competition end will lead to confusion.</p>",

The link shows a case where the organizers waited until the last minute and extended the deadline because of a small mistake on their part, which didn't affect most of the participants. In our case, there is still time to communicate the extension in advance, and the issue has a much heavier impact. If the organizers act promptly instead of waiting for the virus to force a last-minute extension, everyone will have time to adjust their post-competition plans. They probably have to adjust those plans anyways because of the crisis. If the extension is given a week or two in advance, and is given for a reason that is globally impacting the international community, then it will be a legitimate extension.</p>",

This global pandemic is impacting us all in one way or another, and at Kaggle, we've definitely been giving thought to how our Kaggle family (the entire community) is being affected, so that we can be as supportive as possible in this difficult time.</p>\n\n<p>Kaggle and the host team have discussed this competition's timeline and determined the fairest and least disruptive course of action is to stick with the existing timeline. This means March 31st is the deadline for submissions <em>and</em> making your 2 final submission selections, per the <a href=\"https://www.kaggle.com/c/deepfake-detection-challenge/overview/timeline\">competition's timeline</a> defined at the outset.</p>\n\n<p>We hope everyone is staying safe. I don't think extending the deadline one or two weeks will add fairness to those who are strongly affected by covid.

Is it possible to ask for an extension for the 31 of March deadline?\n\nSince this is my first Kaggle challenge I am not sure if this has been done before or maybe frowned upon but if many are affected I think it is fair. \n\nPlease upvote if you agree the organizers should extend this challenge. ",
"781047": "Hi everyone, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge this thread and the valid points and opinions raised by all of you. This global pandemic is impacting us all in one way or another, and at Kaggle, we've definitely been giving thought to how our Kaggle family (the entire community) is being affected, so that we can be as supportive as possible in this difficult time.\n\nKaggle and the host team have discussed this competition's timeline and determined the fairest and least disruptive course of action is to stick with the existing timeline. This means March 31st is the deadline for submissions *and* making your 2 final submission selections, per the [competition's timeline](https://www.kaggle.com/c/deepfake-detection-challenge/overview/timeline) defined at the outset.\n\nWe hope everyone is staying safe. And remember to be kind to one another in how you are conveying your opinions -- as is always the rule on Kaggle, and of particular importance now.",
"775558": "For us would be also nice to have an extension, we were testing and training the model at the office in our off-work hours, but due to the situation in Spain we can no longer access to that machine, so now we have to prepare another environment on the cloud from scratch.",
"775446": "An extension wuld be appreciated.",
"777699": "I don't mean for this to be derogatory, but I am seeing many of the people asking for an extension are people who have not surpassed or done any submissions beyond the all 0.5 benchmark. I don't feel we should delay a million-dollar competition for people who have not even generated a real submission yet. Some people have been working on this for 4 months straight. ",
"778923": "This just became more interesting. There's indeed a lot of reasons for either against an extension, and agree with an extension. \n\nPeople who are not satisfied with their current rank regardless of what their current rank is will want an extension. People who are satisfied with their current rank and/or are not expecting their rank to go higher don't want an extension. \n\nSurely, there are lots of people affected by the coronavirus. They didn't think/expect that the coronavirus would spread to their country/region(at least for me). Take America as an example, a few weeks ago, the officials say people who have/possibly have the coronavirus are all quarantined, but all of a sudden, it started to spread out(and massive amount of people got sick, schools/universities closed). For us, we luckily didn't get affected by it, but I'm sure, some people are affected by it.\n\nFor those of who participated in the middle of the competition, its their choice, they're not forced to join lately. But for those of who are affected by the virus, they're forced to loose time.",

"778317": "I didn't participate in this competition yet and personally want there to be an extension because that might give me enough time to participate, but to me, it seems like what's really fair is keeping the initial deadline.",

"778427": "First of all let me say that I'm fine with either extending the competition deadline or not. That said, here it goes my opinion about this request for extension.\n\nAlthough in my case the COVID isn't affecting my capacity or resources to work on this competition, I'm in favor of an extension because there are others that might be affected by it. Either being directly impacted and not able to work, or prevented from using resources due to schools or other places closing down.\nIn the end everyone will have more time to improve their models, including the top competitors. So a better deep fake detection model will be created 😀 ",
"789048": "Normally I would be against extensions given rules are set at the beginning.\nPersonally in this case I am in favor of an extension. Because indeed it is extraordinary; and the majority is got affected.\nThe reason I am in favor; If you check my submissions I was submitting everyday until a month ago.\nBut within last 30 days; my kids are at home and I prioritized them(of course) heavily and i barely submit anything in last 30 days. Now things are better(we have adapted to the new routine); so I can start again working on this one. Probably there are many people like this.\n\nBut I understand if there is no extension.",
"777989": "I'm against extending deadline for some reasons.\n1. We don't know when covid-19 situation will end. It can last more than 2 months from now, and can even get worse globally. I don't think extending the deadline one or two weeks will add fairness to those who are strongly affected by covid. Unexpected deadline extension near the competition end will lead to confusion.",

There is no excuse.)\nEven extending due date is not fair to both those who are affected by the virus or not.\nSince I participated in the middle of the competition, extending due date is advantageous to me. But I think extending due date is a loss of both fairness and equity.",
"772300": "Deadline extensions have not been popular on Kaggle: https://www.kaggle.com/c/ieee-fraud-detection/discussion/110777\n\nObviously, the covid-19 epidemic is a very special case, but just sharing this to show the counterpoint to extending the deadline. Many people have been working on this problem for a long time and plan breaks around competition end. ",

"772763": "I would also like an extension, a week or two would be great. We've been \"quarantined\" for at least two weeks. I don't have access to my workstation. I'm sure there are other people that have had to at least switch platforms; teams that no longer meet, etc.",
"788479": "Some more thoughts:\n\n1. Why is extension \"unfair\" to LB Toppers?\n Someone could be at top of LB because someone else did not have time to complete their model.\n So, I believe that an extension always helps the (real) Toppers!\n\n2. Someone planning vacation/travel - well that is NOT AT ALL POSSIBLE NOW because of Coronavirus lockdowns world-wide!\n\n3. Also helps with restriction of 2 submissions only per day etc.",
"784981": "EVERYONE in the world and all our families are affected by Coronavirus related restrictions right now.\n\nIf not a big extension, at least 2 weeks should be considered to compensate for all the disturbances, so that participants get a chance to complete their work and submit their best models.\n\nPS: In addition to other restrictions already being enforced, India has just announced a 3-week country-wide lockdown starting today\nhttps://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/24/coronavirus-indias-prime-minister-orders-nationwide-lockdown.html",
"776228": "Interesting. It's not fair for those who have done a lot to work at home, such as preparing data again and buying new services. You should prepare earlier for this instead of asking for extension. ",
"775904": "Yes, with more and more people impacted by COVID-19, it will be fair to extend the deadline a bit.",
"772787": "I agree with extending the deadline, because it is the fair choice. If the deadline remains the same, then a large number of people in the competition who are affected by the epidemic will be unfairly disadvantaged. Plus, anyone who works a job will probably have to sacrifice sleep if they want to be competitive as the deadline approaches. This can put them at risk for the virus by weakening their immune system. An extra couple of weeks would give us both a fairer competition and a better end result in terms of the solutions that come out of this. There is also clear precedent based on the international response to this crisis.",
"776662": "Hello all,\n\nFirst of all, I wish you all safety and good health amid the COVID-19 crisis that has hit the world. I am also writing to ask for an extension of the deadline since, in my country, a ban has been issued on leaving homes; therefore, my team is no longer capable of accessing the hardware at university. Some people might suggest using online services such as AWS; however, I would like to stress the fact that not everyone is privileged to use such services. As a result, a large portion of the community is forced to put a halt to their competition work. Consequently, it is reasonable to extend the deadline to give competitors the chance to effectively engage with the competition.\n\nThanks and good luck to all.",

"788454": "Two reasons for Extension supported by Leaderboard scores trend:\n\n1. NO extension : scores will be around 0.20 on 1-Apr\n WITH Extension : best scores could go below 0.17 by 15-Apr\n \n Trend:\n (i) In recent two weeks, WestLake went from 0.25028 (12-Mar) to 0.2023 (26-Mar)\n (ii) Others also, best score of 0.20x achieved only now (this week since 21-Mar)\n\n2. More importantly, top scores are still not below 0.100\n whereas 99% accuracy is reported by Research papers such as below\n https://www.kaggle.com/c/deepfake-detection-challenge/discussion/133348\n - (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1912.11035.pdf)\n https://www.researchgate.net/publication/332812263_GAN_is_a_friend_or_foe_a_framework_to_detect_various_fake_face_images\n\nMy conclusion: The competition organizers will definitely benefit by an extension!!",
"778356": "To be fair to those who doesn't want to extend the deadline regardless of reason/s, we need to climb to at least top 10 or reach a score of less than 0.22 before we demand any deadline extension.",
"786120": "Yes, I am the all-0.5er at the moment, which gave me an opportunity to apply for and obtain my AWS credit. Yes I joined a month ago, which is now obvious for me that w/o any prior experience is not enough even to go through all the AWS ML facilities and assess their most efficient use possible, not even mentioning the comprehension on all the existing frameworks/models/approaches/techniques zoos. So at least 2 weeks extension would be really great for me to be able to spend my credit at least.\n\nFrom the other point.. We still compete for finding the best DFs detection methods, while the rest of humanity is being struck by CoViD?... Please do not extend, we don't deserve it. And as AWS credit is valid through April, I think I would still be able to check my ideas after the challenge is closed.\n\nLove and peace all around!",
