"content": "
Thank you to everyone who went the extra mile and submitted a working note. After review, we'd like to announce this year's two best working note submissions, which will be awarded $2,500 each.
\n
The winners are:
\n
\"Tackling Domain Shift in Bird Audio Classification via Transfer Learning and Semi-Supervised Distillation: A Case Study on BirdCLEF+ 2025\" by Volodymyr Sydorskyi and Fernando Gonçalves
\n
and
\n
\"Distilling Spectrograms into Tokens: Fast and Lightweight Bioacoustic Classification for BirdCLEF+ 2025\" by Anthony Miyaguchi, Murilo Gustineli and Adrian Cheung
\n
Congratulations! We'll reference the PDFs here as soon as the working notes are officially published.
\n
Update June 2: Added submission information
\n
Building accurate knowledge of the identity, geographic distribution, and evolution of species is essential for sustainable development and biodiversity conservation. However, the routine identification of plants and animals in the field significantly hampers the aggregation of new data and knowledge. Identifying and naming living plants or animals is almost impossible for the public and often a challenging task for professionals and naturalists. Bridging this gap is a key challenge toward enabling effective biodiversity monitoring systems. The LifeCLEF evaluation campaign has been boosting and evaluating advances in this domain since 2011.
\n
Each year, participants of LifeCLEF publish their research as part of the CLEF workshop proceedings (e.g., CLEF 2024 Proceedings). As in previous years, we encourage you to contribute to this research by publishing your solution as a working note, even if you're not among the top-scoring participants. Why should you do this? Here are a few reasons:
\n
\n
Publish original research and gain recognition as a scientist
\n
Make your solution accessible to a broad audience
\n
Earn citations and build your reputation
\n
Submitting a working note makes you eligible to present at CLEF 2025
\n
\n
CLEF organizers provide a template to help you get started. Each working note should be between 4 and 8 pages long. If you have something interesting you tried or a good ablation study, we want to hear from you!
\n
Additionally, we will review and rate all submitted working notes; the two best papers will be awarded $2,500 each (independent of the final score!).
\n
For more details on the review process, visit the “Evaluation” subsection.
\n
Curious about what a working note looks like? After review, we'd like to announce this year's two best working note submissions, which will be awarded $2,500 each.\n\nThe winners are:\n\n**\"Tackling Domain Shift in Bird Audio Classification via Transfer Learning and Semi-Supervised Distillation: A Case Study on BirdCLEF+ 2025\"** by Volodymyr Sydorskyi and Fernando Gonçalves\n\nand\n\n**\"Distilling Spectrograms into Tokens: Fast and Lightweight Bioacoustic Classification for BirdCLEF+ 2025\"** by Anthony Miyaguchi, Murilo Gustineli and Adrian Cheung\n\nCongratulations! We'll reference the PDFs here as soon as the working notes are officially published.\n\n*Update June 2: Added submission information*\n\nBuilding accurate knowledge of the identity, geographic distribution, and evolution of species is essential for sustainable development and biodiversity conservation. The [LifeCLEF evaluation campaign](https://www.imageclef.org/LifeCLEF2025) has been boosting and evaluating advances in this domain since 2011.\n\nEach year, participants of LifeCLEF publish their research as part of the CLEF workshop proceedings (e.g., [CLEF 2024 Proceedings](https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-3740/)). As in previous years, we encourage you to contribute to this research by publishing your solution as a working note, even if you're not among the top-scoring participants. Why should you do this? Here are a few reasons:\n\n- Publish original research and gain recognition as a scientist\n- Make your solution accessible to a broad audience\n- Earn citations and build your reputation\n- Submitting a working note makes you eligible to present at CLEF 2025\n\nCLEF organizers provide a template to help you get started. Each working note should be between 4 and 8 pages long. If you have **something interesting** you tried or **a good ablation study**, we want to hear from you!\n\nAdditionally, we will review and rate all submitted working notes; **the two best papers will be awarded $2,500 each (independent of the final score!)**.\n\nFor more details on the review process, visit the “[Evaluation](https://www.kaggle.com/competitions/birdclef-2025/overview/evaluation)” subsection.\n\nCurious about what a working note looks like? Here are the two best working notes from last year:\n\n**Anthony Miyaguchi, Adrian Cheung, Murilo Gustineli, and Ashley Kim: \"[Transfer Learning with Pseudo Multi-Label Birdcall Classification for DS@GT BirdCLEF 2024](https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-3740/paper-202.pdf)\"**\n\n**Emiel Witting, Hugo de Heer, Jeffrey Lim, Cahit Tolga Kopar and Kristóf Sándor: \"[Addressing the Challenges of Domain Shift in Bird Call Classification for BirdCLEF 2024](https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-3740/paper-211.pdf)\"**\n\nThis is the timeline for working note submissions:\n\n- June 5th, 2025: Final Submission Deadline for competition\n- June 18th, 2025: Deadline for the submission of working notes\n- June 19th - June 26th, 2025: Peer-review period\n- June 27th, 2025: Notification of acceptance\n- July 7th, 2025: Deadline for the submission of the camera-ready working notes\n- July 25th, 2025: Announcement of best working note winners \n\n**Submission information:**\n\nWorking notes are published within CEUR-WS proceedings, resulting in an assignment of an individual DOI (URN) and an indexing by many bibliography systems, including DBLP. According to the CEUR-WS policies, a light review of the working notes will be conducted by LifeCLEF organizing committee to ensure quality. As an illustration, LifeCLEF 2024 working notes (task overviews and participant working notes) can be found within [CLEF 2024 CEUR-WS proceedings](https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-3740/). These proceedings are indexed by most bibliography repositories such as DBLP, Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, etc.\n\n**Submission template**\n\nPlease use the [LaTeX template provided by the organizers](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KPW1f5DBqZ7kX3CnMXgEQ9gSSSAul1KG/view?usp=sharing) for writing your working notes. \n\n**Please note**: It's the 2024 template, the CLEF organizers did not yet provide an updated version. For now, please only change the date in the copyright section.\n\n**Submission through EasyChair**\n\nThe CLEF organizers published a PDF that explains the submission process in more detail, you can [download it here](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EK4PHw3OpEPwRG488RQDrKqiONlUNhWH/view?usp=sharing).\n\n**Please note**: The updated submission link is [https://www.easychair.org/my/conference?conf=clef2025](https://www.easychair.org/my/conference?conf=clef2025).\n\nWe look forward to your contributions!",
"3216962": "Hello, i 'd like to ask if my scores are not so high, but I have something new which is different from the method in the starter notebook, could i submit a working notebook?",
"3217237": "We encourage it! We're really happy to see new ideas with a good effort behind them, even if they don't crack the leaderboard. In fact, many times in the past well-written and well-investigated negative results have won a prize for Best Working Note.",
"3223707": "stefankahl @tomdenton — thank you for the informative post!\n\nI’d appreciate clarification on a couple of points:\n- Is there an updated paper template available that includes CLEF 2025 copyright information?\n\nThanks in advance for your help!",
"3223712": "Hey, really glad you're putting a working note together!\nWe have not received an updated template from the CLEF organizers, so recommend using the 2024 template and updating the year.",
"3225008": "tomdenton\n\nThanks for the information!\nThanks for such an opportunity to submit a paper! \n\nAm I correct that I need to change *CLEF 2024: Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum, September 09–12, 2024, Grenoble, France* to *CLEF 2025: Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum, September 09–12, 2025, Madrid, Spain* ?\n\nAnother question: as I understand, we should **not** de-anonymize the paper. Is it correct ? \n\nAlso, what is a policy regarding using LLMs for text refinement? Can we use them just for grammar correction and minor refinements? \n\nThanks in advance for your answers!",
"3226011": "Yes, please change to 2025 and Mdrid (we can do that later for the camera ready version once we have word from the CLEF organizers). Please don't anonymize the paper (easy chair will ask you for author names anyway) and of course, use LLM for refinement as long as it retains your original thought."
