Unfortunately, eBird changed some of these codes with their most recent taxonomy update, and thus for some of the codes in this competition it might not work. We still use the 2021 eBird taxonomy, which is somewhat outdated but consistent with previous competitions.</p>",

      "content": "<p>Just to add to Stefan's completely correct answer:<br>\nWe have some code <a href=\"https://github.com/google-research/perch/tree/main/chirp/taxonomy\" target=\"_blank\">here</a> for managing conversions between taxonomies (eg, ebird2021 and xeno-canto). It looks like we haven't added conversions for ebird2023 yet; if anyone is interested in helping land that, I'll be happy to provide guidance.</p>\n<p>Conversion can be tricky: you have occasional new species (no conversion possible), merges (things previously considered distinct species relabeled as subspecies), and splits (things that were previously subspecies recognized as distinct species). Our approach is to try to maintain a version-controlled mapping, so at least we can write down our rationales and update as needed.</p>",
