I recently went for a bird watching adventure in Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekad Kerala, India. During that time, my guide was very proficient in identifying birds by just hearing sounds. In Salim Ali bird sanctuary itself there are almost 300 species of land birds and another 100+ species of water birds.

I was genuinely curious, how they learned about all these birds and memorized all these. This is when my guide talked about the Merlin app, which can help in learning more about various species of bird.

Yeah it was a nice trip. Really enjoyed the time at wild and staying overnight in a forest which had elephants close by as well.

Yeah it's hard to memorize all these voices, yet I think this is some kind of flexing skill among forest guides. I have seen in some youtube videos where guides who were experienced for 30 years can recognize the birds with bird calls Note the video linked is speaking in Malayalam.

My forest guide was having 1 year experience, yet he also was able to identify bird calls easily. I had created a video when I was Walking Tour inside Deep Forest - Thattekad bird Sanctuary with guide.
