"content": "
Not sure if these webpages have been shared, but I found them useful to gain some context on the NFL and their progress on improving player safety. Also the paper primarily by Biocore members (University of Virginia venture I think) is very helpful for understanding concussions in context of all play types in football. The paper was first published in early November. An excerpt from their paper: \"Interestingly, almost twice as many concussions occurred while tackling as opposed to being tackled, and most concussions sustained while tackling were caused by a blow with the body of the tackled player. This finding may indicate potential for continued refinement and teaching of tackling techniques that minimize helmet impacts for the tackler\". The NFL probably took this research into consideration prior to its publication of the new helmet rule (Initiating contact with the helmet to any part of an opponent. Contact does not have to be to an opponent’s head or neck area — lowering the head and initiating contact to an opponent’s torso, hips, and lower body, is also a foul.). I hope this information is helpful to y'all. Cheers!
\n\n
\n
2018 Rules Changes And Points of Emphasis: https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2018-rules-changes-and-points-of-emphasis/
\n
NFL 2018 Health and Safety Report: https://annualreport.playsmartplaysafe.com/#data-injury-reduction-plan
\n
NFL 2017 Injury Data: https://www.playsmartplaysafe.com/newsroom/reports/2017-injury-data/
\n
ESPN coverage of NFL Call to Action: /id/24743994/really-changed-nfl-call-action-concussions\">http://www.espn.com/nfl/story//id/24743994/really-changed-nfl-call-action-concussions
\n
2018 Kickoff Rule Changes: https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/09/07/nfl-kickoff-rule-changes-explained-onside-return-clarified
\n
Chronology of Kickoff rule changes: http://www.footballzebras.com/2018/05/chronology-of-kickoff-rules-changes/
\n
Relevant Concussion paper: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0363546518804498
\n
",
