You asked if they are related and they are related in the sense a <code>Role</code> will typically be filled by a player who plays a particular <code>Position</code>. For example a Punt Returner (<code>Role</code> <code>PR</code>) will almost always be played by someone whose <code>Position</code> is <code>WR</code>, <code>RB</code>, or <code>CB</code> because these positions are good at catching the ball and running with it. </p>\n\n<p>Some roles and the positions that typically fill them:\n<code>PR</code> (Punt Returner) -- <code>WR</code>, <code>RB</code>, <code>CB</code>\n<code>GR/GL</code> (Gunner) -- <code>CB</code>, <code>WR</code>, <code>FS</code>, <code>SS</code>\n<code>VR/VL</code> (Jammer) -- <code>CB</code>, <code>FS</code>\n<code>PPR/PPL</code> (Punt Protector) -- <code>SS</code>,<code>RB</code>,<code>FS</code>\n<code>PLT/PRT/PRG/PLG</code> -- <code>OLB</code>, <code>ILB</code>\n<code>PLW/PRW</code> -- <code>FS</code>,<code>SS</code>\n<code>PDLX/PDRX</code> -- filled by players from pretty much every defensive <code>Position</code> along with some <code>WR</code>, <code>TE</code>, <code>RB</code></p>",
